Welcome, friends, to my response to [community profile] snowflake_challenge prompt #9: "In your own space, promote at least one canon that you adore (old, new, forever fandom). Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so."

I think anyone currently on my Flist knows me well enough to guess that we'll be talking all about

I put the meat of the thing behind a cut so as not to clutter up anyone's reading page. )

Thank you for coming to my TED Talk.

CHERRY
Lew "Chuckler" Juergens/Robert Leckie

“Might not be so bad, life in the brig. Couple square and a guaranteed place to sleep. Maybe a pretty girl to come visit from time to time,” Chuckler considered, lifting one shoulder in a shrug. “Who knows?”

“Pretty girl, huh?” Bobbie echoed. Chuckler nodded and Bobbie arched one manicured eyebrow. “And just where do you suppose you’ll find one of those?”

Author's Note: A fill for the Loose Lips Sink Ships Prompt Meme’s Memorial Prompt:

“Lew 'Chuckler' Juergens/Robert Leckie, Genderswap love”

This is just a quick, flirty exploratory scene of these two. Thanks to [personal profile] muccamukk  for the quick edit, which made it a much neater piece than it initially was.

Prompter, I hope you like it!

You can read it on AO3 over here.

MARGINALIA
Joseph Liebgott & David Webster

Webster heaved a sigh and threw his head back to stare imploringly up at the ceiling of the tent with his hands splayed wide. “Why?” he groaned, scowling at the heavens. “Why can’t you let this go?”

“Why can’t you just tell me what you’re up to?” Joe shot back.

(Or: in which Webster really likes Robert Leckie and Liebgott really doesn’t.)

Author's Note: Written for a request over on the Loose Lips Sink Ships Prompt Meme:

“AU set in either BoB or TP. Everybody hates Leckie. So does Liebgott. Web begs to differ. (Friendship or slash, writer's choice. Background Webgott is a plus.)”

Apologies to Steinbeck, who I really don’t like but also probably doesn’t deserve Liebgott’s derision. I’m not going to apologize to Leckie, who likely does, but I promise all the shit talk is in good fun and I, myself, am a fan of Leckie’s even though he’s kind of the worst.

No offense is meant to either secretaries or folks who suffer enuresis of any kind.

Marginalia are defined by Wikipedia as “marks made in the margins of a book or other document. They may be scribbles, comments, glosses (annotations), critiques, doodles, or illuminations.” Take that how you will.

Thank you to Muccamukk for giving it a spag check and helping me make it flow better. Prompter, I hope you like it!

COME TAKE ME HOME AGAIN
Merriell "Snafu" Shelton/Eugene Sledge

Merriell had figured out pretty early on that the war was going to haunt him one way or another. He just hadn’t expected it to manifest quite like this—the privileged son of some prominent Alabama doctor baying like a stray at Merriell’s heels for permission to follow him home.

Author's Note: This fill was written for the Loose Lips Sink Ships Prompt Meme, which, if y'all aren't already participating, you really should because it's super fun. The prompt was:

"Canon divergence. Sledge wakes up before Snafu leaves the train."

Thanks to [personal profile] muccamukk and [personal profile] scandalinbohemia for looking it over in early draft form and convincing me that it wasn't total garbage. The version posted below hasn't been officially beta-read so any mistakes are mine.

You can also read it on AO3.

BAD IN THE BLOOD
Merriell "Snafu" Shelton/Eugene Sledge

“Think you can stand for me?”

It seemed a peculiar question to Eugene’s feverishly wheeling mind, so he cracked an eye up at Shelton—who was frowning handsomely down at him, looking good enough to kiss despite his sweat-stained undershirt and dirt-streaked face, hair slightly matted from a few days’ lack of shower—and sighed exhaustedly, “Why?”

“Gotta get you down to the aid station,” Shelton explained. His hand was still resting possessively on Eugene’s back, his touch astonishingly tender against Eugene’s clammy, goose-pimpled skin. “Can’t have you dyin’ all alone in your rack a week before we ship outta this shithole for good, an’ that putain de docteur on duty got himself so busy with some inventory checklist he can’t be bothered with a house call.”

“Ain’t dyin’,” Eugene mumbled contrarily.

“Might could be,” Shelton shot back.

Author's Note: Written for [community profile] hc_bingo , with only extremely surface-level research into period-accurate medical procedures and rushed along anyway because I just wanted to get it done, dammit. Follows along with show canon, where Snafu goes with Sledge and—presumably—the rest of K Company to do occupation duty in China, but borrows the bit about blood poisoning and the "hot soak" treatment from the actual canon of Sledge's book "China Marine."

This my first foray into writing these two, and I sincerely hope that I did them justice. Many thanks to [personal profile] scandalinbohemia for the quick-pass and suggestions, which made this fic roughly six thousand times better and several hundred words shorter. You are a gem.

You can also read it over on AO3.

ALIVE IN OUR SKINS
Lew "Chuckler" Juergens/Robert "Lucky" Leckie

What made markedly less sense, Leckie considered, glancing down to his thigh, where his sleeping foxhole companion was steadily soaking his dungarees through with drool, was this fixation on Chuckler.

Author's Note: This was written as a part of the [community profile] easycotroopers Rare Pair Meme for [personal profile] teatimemols , whose prompt was: “Generosity - affection - protection.”

This fill exists for exactly two reasons: 1) I felt kind of bad that the Rare Pair Meme was so saturated with BoB content and 2) I discovered that Chuckler's first name is also "Lewis" and I felt contractually obligated to write him. I will admit to knowing almost nothing about Leckie, Chuckler, or the particulars of their involvement in the various campaigns of the Pacific Theater. I've watched The Pacific twice now, but will happily own up to a pretty severe character bias which has driven me to fast forward through basically two-thirds of the narrative in the interest of watching baby Rami Malek swan about being a sly dickhead all over the place.

I think I did a pretty okay job, even so, but there may be some historical inaccuracies. I've also taken a few dramatic liberties—for example, there likely would have been pretty severe light discipline on Gloucester but I like the backdrop of a character brooding over a smoke, so Leckie's having one in this story and anyone who doesn't like it can cart their criticisms elsewhere.

Title is from a poem called 'Accidents of Birth,' by William Meredith, which is also quoted at the beginning of the fic. It seemed like the kind of thing Leckie might enjoy, though it was written by what is essentially a contemporary so the poem would have been published after he returned home from the war. This was not beta-read, because I wanted to get a fill out and posted in a reasonable amount of time since all my others have taken or are taking way longer than they probably should. All errors are mine. Enjoy here, or read on AO3 if you prefer.

Mols, I hope you like it!
