So, hockey is back. Or, they're doing exhibition games, anyway, with the intent to be back for real come Saturday. I'm still torn about it and kind of worried that it's a bad idea that's going to blow up in some way or another, but at the same time I'm excited to be watching again.

I'm not really sure how this whole situation is going to go for us, because our GM, who I really liked, just fucking quit in a fit of pique or something, so now we're going into a potential playoff situation with an interim guy who is, admittedly, very experienced, so everything will probably be fine, but ANYWAY. It seemed like a good moment to revisit that time earlier this season when Wonder Goalie Darcy Kuemper TM threw a man to the ice and kicked off a full-line fight between my darling Coyotes and the Calgary Flames.

It's not super violent but it is very delightful, if you're into that sort of thing. Plus you get to see Johnny Hockey be a mad little baby, which is very satisfying if you get any amount of satisfaction out of seeing the Flames be whiny brats, which I do.

So, y'all may or may not be aware of the fact that professional sports in general suffer some fairly homophobic cultural mores. The NHL in particular hasn't seen any out LGBTQ+ players, current or retired, though they're making efforts to change the culture to allow that to happen. A lot of those efforts are thanks to a young man named Brendan Burke, who died in a car accident before he could see any of his efforts come to fruition. CBC's The Fifth Estate put out a really great, if slightly painful, documentary about Brendan and queer players in the NHL that's very good, if you've got 45 minutes to spare. Tumblr user [tumblr.com profile] camwarden was kind enough to upload a non geoblocked version to YouTube, and you can watch it here:

It's a really great, painful look at the treatment of homosexuality in pro sports in general and the NHL in specific, and makes some really good points about a lot of aspects of that issue, including addressing (if briefly) the differences between pressures that male and female pro athletes face to stay in the closet.

Seattle announced the name/logo/color scheme of their new NHL franchise today, and I am such a happy puppy about the whole thing. I'm so delighted that I don't even mind (much) that the Coyotes are getting shunted into the Central Division to make room for Seattle team. (Hopefully it'll wind up working out in my favor, since the Coyotes in Central should mean they'll be playing more regularly against the Stars, which means I'll get to go see my boys in person way more often.) Anyway back to the matter at hand! Despite its general popularity, I really wasn't convinced the Powers That Be TM would go for the Kraken, because it's kind of a weird one, but they did! And boy howdy did their design team do it up right, too. I mean, look at this:

What tremendously sleek and subtle design work. Really well done. They'll also be playing in an arena that's pushing to be the first net zero carbon emissions arena in the world (or at least the US) and aims to "revolutionize sustainable stadium design." I'm not sure what the actual environmental impact will be in terms of architecture and practices, but it's cool that they're trying, even so. Though, Amazon is involved, so I'm cautiously pessimistic about the whole thing.

The NHL's revised pandemic playoffs start on August 1. I'm still not sure how I feel about it. Actually, that's not entirely true. I think it's probably a bad idea and I'm afraid it's going to backfire in a big way that nobody right now expects or anticipates, but maybe I'm just borrowing trouble. I'm going to watch anyway. And the part of me that rubbernecks at car wrecks sort of wants to buy one of the mildly tasteless "Drop the Puck 2020" shirts the NHL is peddling to celebrate the return of the season, in case it does backfire.

Anyway, apologies to everyone once August circles back around and I start screaming about sports again. Will tag appropriately so you can avoid it if that's not to your taste.

We had a lovely little Zoom meeting for the members of my Spiritual Nonfiction class this afternoon. It was nice to see everyone face-to-face and establish some voices and tones and personalities through visuals.

The class itself has been fun so far, though we're still just getting into the rhythm of discussion. There are two essays due over the course of the class and I have absolutely no idea what I'm going to write about and no idea of how to figure that out. Presumably something about the intersection of faith practices and queer identity, but I can't imagine what I could possibly say that would add to that dialogue. Anyway, suggestions for how to determine personal essay/narrative essay topics welcome.

I hung my autographed Conor Garland jersey up in my living room today, after like 4 1/2 months of living in this apartment. It's feeling way more like home now.

I'm still conflicted about the proposed NHL return and the delayed Stanley Cup playoffs. On the one hand, I miss hockey, on the other, it seems like a pretty callous disregard for the health and well-being of both the communities where the athletes will play and the athletes themselves, not to mention a flagrant disregard of money and medical access to ensure regular testing for athletes when there are many, many communities who still can't get it.

Outside of pandemic concerns and as an entirely petty hockey fan, I'm irritated that Vegas and L.A. are still on the list as "hub cities." The Kings are right down there with the Bruins for least favored teams and I just straight up don't enjoy Las Vegas (or the Golden Knights, really), having been twice for work now.

Dog #2 is halfway through the "wet medicine" course the vet gave her for giardia. We only have two syringes left, but it's gotten progressively more difficult to get her to sit still and take the medication, so we'll see how that goes. My goal is to get through it without having to drag her in to the vet just to have them administer it to her. My dogs are always really excited to be at the vet, to the point where we get comments on it from the staff, who are unused to having animals be that stoked to be there, and I would really hate to do anything that changes her perception of the experience. At least the "dry meds" are going down easy—cheese flavored Pill Pockets are a godsend.

Have started venturing outside of the apartment complex with the dogs while on walks to take advantage of the beautifully manicured grounds of housing developments and other apartment buildings in the neighborhood, and it's been hot enough that they're fairly well pooped when we get back and spend most of the day sleeping, which is nice. Especially now that I'm back at work during the week.

I've started getting some messages from confirmed bidders in the [community profile] equalityauction, laying out their fanart requests, which is exciting. It'll be fun to get back into the practice of drawing...well, technically still for money, but at least drawing subject matter that I enjoy more than what I get to do in my day to day work practice.

All in all things are going well, though I could stand to figure out an at-home exercise regimen that challenges me even half as much as kickboxing classes do. Maybe I'll start running again, even if it sucks at first.

Hope everyone is well! <3

Well, we lost to the Stars by one goal last night, which is actually not that bad considering we had our poor third-string goalie Adin Hill between the pipes. Despite the loss, it was a really fun game with a lot of really delightful people.

Jamie Benn got ejected in the second period after he pulled a game misconduct for boarding, which was kind of a bummer (even if it did probably help the Yotes out in the long run) as I deeply enjoy watching him play. Either way, getting to see my boys live in action is always a treat.

Highlight of the night was being close enough to Conor Garland to see his facial expressions, as well as the couple in front of us who were viciously heckling the Coyotes but were so funny I couldn't help laughing. Our seats were four rows back from the glass on the Stars' goal side, so there was a lot of action to be had, though I am disappointed that nobody dropped gloves. Lawson Crouse is usually good for a punch-em-up but he didn't seem to be in a fighting mood.

It was extra fun to be there on Hockey Is For Everyone night. A friend of mine who tagged along was unfamiliar with the event as well as the You Can Play organization, and it was a really lovely moment to be able to explain to him how important it was to me, as a queer person, to see professional athletes openly talking to a stadium of hundreds about their experiences with the toxic culture of the sports-industrial complex and their hopes to change that landscape for future generations of closeted baby queers and other marginalized groups.

There's a lot of bad bullshit rooted in sports culture but it's nice to see folks actively working to try and make in-roads, even if it's going to take awhile to get anywhere. Slow progress is still progress, as all the self-care listicles tell me.

We had a few unbelievable SNAFUs at the beginning and end of the evening that eventually worked themselves out in true sitcom fashion, further confirming my suspicions that my life may actually be a primetime TV spot I'm not aware is being filmed. Plus, being at an actual game for the first time since my mom and I dropped in to watch the Stars play the Flames when she visited last has really lit my fire to write the TP hockey AU I was talking about on the Discord server the other day. No I did not spend like an hour reading Deadspin articles last night to be sure that I would get the tone right, you must be thinking of some other mildly obsessive war history/hockey fan.

All in all, a thoroughly pleasant evening spent in thoroughly pleasant company, though if I had to do it over again I would choose to skip all the bits that required running through the rain in the cold and the dark.(I've dropped a solid register in vocal tone from all the enthusiastic hollering, which makes it possible for me to sing a few songs that aren't usually quite within my natural range and has been an additional and deeply nerdy joy.)

We won again despite a rocky third period and I learned that Conor Garland’s team nickname is apparently “Gar.” Also took my autographed jersey in to get it framed. What a good good sports day it has been~

I have to say, it is really tremendously nice to see my team climbing the standings, especially on the hard work and perseverance of my favorite player. (And it sure didn't hurt that it was on Jets home ice, nyah nyah.)

It's obvious that everyone is working hard, not just Garland, but I'm so delighted to see that he not only earned himself a steady roster spot with his showing last season when our entire team was on IR, but that he's only getting better now that he's running around throwing elbows with dudes who have a solid 2-4 inches minimum on him, for the most part. He's three goals for the season and it's still really early so it would be utterly foolish to count hens, so to speak, but we were a measly two points from Cup playoffs last year and it's not impossible that we could make a solid run once we gain some traction.

The boys are working hard for it, anyway, and I'm certainly going to enjoy watching them do it.

It's a damn shame the Yotes aren't out here until February, of all godforsaken months, but I'll be there in my jersey screaming my head off so loud that adults are uncomfortable having children in the same row as me, like always. I think Mom and I are going to try and catch a Stars game while she's in town. It's against the Senators so it's probably going to be a bloodbath but it should be pretty fun, anyway.

We're playing the Preds on Thursday so I hope she's prepared to be up until probably eleven or so while I shriek like a monster and argue nonsensically with the refs on TV.
