Week two of wrangling plants continues—for the most part—to delight and inspire!

I brought home a selection of trailing plant cuttings today, with the aim of trying to coax them to root in water and then repotting them. I don’t remember what they are, exactly, except that they are not Pothos and their name might possibly start with “ch.” I will endeavor to ask tomorrow but, knowing myself, I’ma forget for like a week.

There’s also a tray of rejected succulents with my name on it sitting in our warehouse, but I was too eager to get home and eat a sandwich to go in and grab it after my trainer and I returned to the office this afternoon, so I’ll pick it up tomorrow.

I mostly like my trainer but I’m a little ethically lukewarm on something we did today.

We were servicing an account in a small, franchised insurance office, and the agent who owned the office was there brokering a policy for another woman. At one point, said agent passed a note to my trainer requesting that we not leave until the customer was gone, because she (the agent) was being made to feel unsafe, based on the client’s behavior. We stretched out our time there, and the client did appear to calm some, but my trainer eventually packed their gear up and ushered us on to the next location.

Realistically, I know it’s not our job to hang around, essentially fulfilling a security role, and that we have a responsibility to attend to a certain number of clients in a day, but it felt weird and bad to me that we just left. My trainer said something along the lines of, “She needs to grow up and learn how to deal with it,” and I had a whole-body yikes reaction in response. Hopefully everything turned out okay. Like I said, the client at the insurance office was calm when my trainer decided it was time to go, but I know how that can change on a dime. Fingers crossed that nothing escalated after we took our leave, and that we haven’t alienated one of our own clients.

I haven’t started my seeds yet—tired, lazy, take your pick—but intend to sometime this week.

Another great thing about actually working again is that I’m actually exhausted in the evenings nowadays, which makes it roughly ten times easier to sleep. I’m still not a great sleeper, and I probably never will be, but every little bit helps, right?

Oh boy, it’s been awhile, huh?

I’ve had a lot of life changes in the past year, some bad, but mostly good, or at least for the better even if it seems like it might take a hot minute for said changes to actually pay off. Anyway, in all of that, I’ve been thinking about how I want to spend my time and what I want to do with myself and one of the things I’d like to get better at is regular journaling/self-reflection. Not that I imagine I’ll ever share it with anyone outside of my fellow internet denizens, but I like the thought of there being some record of my existence that my niece, nephew, and possible but unlikely future progeny can look up and sift through for a more rounded understanding of the person I am/was. Less the pornography, but I suppose if they’re brave enough to come looking they can determine whether they’re brave enough to delve into that particular pastime or not.

As of right now, the most interesting things going on are, in no particular order:

  • I started a new job yesterday! It’s just an hourly gig driving a route and maintaining installations of live plants in various office buildings/apartment complexes/hotels/etc., but so far I’m really enjoying it. Last night I came home with three baby aloes and a trash bag full of Sansivieria (snake plants!) so that was delightful. I also met my move goal (the Apple watch tracker of calories I’d like to lose in a day) without really doing anything but wandering around after the lovely technician currently training me and sticking my hands in the dirt on command, which suggests that just the day-to-day in this position is going to make an improvement on my overall health, so that’s promising, too.

  • I signed up to run a 10K at the end of February! I’m not sure how it’s gonna go, considering that I just started a couch-to-5K program last week, but I’m at least gonna try it. Even if I don’t do great at the event itself, working toward it will be a huge success for me.

  • I’m growing lithops for the first time ever! Or, I suppose I should say I’m attempting to successfully overwinter them, and then will be growing them (hopefully) in the spring and later in the fall after they go dormant again during the summer. For those unfamiliar, lithops are often called “living stones,” and are some of the more notoriously difficult plants in the succulent kingdom to keep alive. There’s a pretty good chance they’ll die, but I’m starting off with eleven in various stages of maturity so we shall see. Pics to come.

  • I’m attempting to grow succulents from seeds for the first time! Specifically, Greenovia dodrentalis, aka desert roses. They’re these little teeny tiny specs that look like flakes of black pepper and I honestly have no idea if a single one of them is going to germinate, but I picked up a neat trick for planting delicate seeds from a YouTube video by the University of Illinois Extension, which suggests using a piece of toilet paper so you can see where, precisely, the seeds have landed. I intend to do the same, but will likely dampen the TP first, so it better catches the seeds. And because TP is designed to biodegrade, it shouldn’t hinder the sprouts from putting out roots, assuming any of the seeds germinate. Will report back once my humidifier pots come in on Monday.

  • I’m also trying to re-start my hot pepper collection! I nabbed a packet of “pink tiger” bhut chili seeds from my favorite place, Pepper Joe’s, as well as a packet of 15 or so miscellaneous hot pepper seeds, which they included for free, and will likewise report back once they’ve been safely planted in humidifier pots.

  • I made an Arizona hiking trail spreadsheet! I’m hesitant to call it a bucket list, though it does absolutely include trails that would also be on my overall life bucket list, but either way, I intend to do a lot more hiking in 2022 since I’m back in the beautiful desert where there’s beautiful mountains to climb and dangerous plants and animals to encounter. I’m hoping to trail train my dogs so I can bring them with me, as they’re still pretty spry for being 9 years old, but we shall see. It may be that they’re just crotchety old ladies who want to relax for the rest of their lives and honestly I’d be fine with that so long as they’re healthy and happy.

  • I plan to start car camping in 2022! I don’t know where yet, although it will likely be in preparation to hit some of the more out of the way hiking trails detailed on the aforementioned spreadsheet early enough in the mornings to avoid heat and crowds. In a perfect world, I’ll have the doglets with me—for company more than safety, as neither one of them is big enough to be of real help in a situation of legitimate danger. Either way, I intend to get some use out of the wonderful, -30F temperature rated sleeping bag my parents bought me for Christmas.

One of the coolest things in all of this is that my step-mom is very, very into plants. So despite staying with my parents a little longer than initially planned upon and blowing through a decent portion of my savings to avoid having to return to Texas and thus being unable to move forward with house buying or apartment renting until some of that is replenished, she seems okay with me bringing a bunch of random growing things into the house with me. My dad just straight up doesn’t care as long as I have a good time and am sticking around.

I hope everyone out there has been doing well and invite you to share triumphs of 2021 or your hopes and goals for 2022 if you’re so inclined! I missed you, Dreamwidth!!!

A lovely little meme I borrowed from the delightful [personal profile] darvyn:

List the first lines of your last 10 stories (if you have fewer than 10, just list them all!). See if there are any patterns. Choose your favorite opening line.

The full gamut is behind a cut, for space reasons, but... )

...I think my favorite out of all of them is the opener for Highway to the Edge. It does the best job of establishing character voice and conflict, imo, and I feel like the words "murder plot" are kind of an automatic hook to swindle someone into continuing to read at least a little further.

It has also become very clear to me, when weighing the first line from something like Curtain Call—which is a piece I wrote quite some time ago but only very recently posted—against the others, that I've gotten better at writing, in general. I still have a tendency to overwrite, but I think I've worked on my flow a lot and managed to hit a point where it's not necessarily a bad thing that I get florid at times.

I'm not sure that I have a pattern, per se, though I am pretty proud of my consistency when it comes to just flinging the reader straight into the action.

What are some of y'all's favorites of your own?

It's been a minute since the last time I used this ol' journal of mine for something beyond an exchange letter or to share a piece of fic I've written. During that span, lots of stuff has gone on and many things have happened, the long and short of which boils down to: I now live in sunny Arizona, continue to be employed at the same place, and am now down an aunt on my family roster, as one I was hoping to see more often passed away unexpectedly (from non-Covid related things) right as I moved back home.

Mom and two of my other aunts got Covid through their own foolishness, but all are fine and haven't had very bad symptoms or anything, which is a small blessing. Went and got tested myself when I found out, just in case, but am fine.

In lighter, brighter news, my dogs flew on a plane for the first time when we moved and managed not to absolutely destroy the trip for everyone involved. They're getting along (for a given value of the term) with my dad's dog. Considering that means I can stay with my parents rent-free for as long as I can stand, which may be a shorter timeframe than I'm hoping for want, I'm pretty pleased. Also, my brother and his partner are pregnant! Which is exciting, as it means I'll be an aunt for the second time and will live close enough to visit the little bean, unlike with my first nephew, who I love very dearly but is across the country from me.

I'm still writing and drawing. Trying my best to tie up everything I need to for the Rare Pair Exchange I'm running over on [community profile] heavyartillery and the (many, many) projects I still owe for [community profile] equalityauction. I dyed my hair pink right after I got here and have absolutely not regretted it once so far. I've received many, many compliments, including several from the employees at the recreational weed dispensary down the street from me, which I waited a whole week to shamefully take advantage of, like a real adult.

I'm also in the process of starting up a new garden! My parents have a whole side-yard languishing out in the back of their house (though, I feel obligated to note, the rest of the yard is very handsomely landscaped) and they've told me I can go ahead and put raised beds in it if I so choose. Surprising probably nobody, I do so choose.

Here's the shortlist for what I'm considering planting*, in no particular order:

VEGETABLES/HERBS
lemon balm
chives
summer squash (aka zucchini, the cucumber's superior cousin**)
watermelon
radishes
watermelon radishes
cherry tomatoes
regular ass tomatoes
beets
bell peppers

HOT PEPPERS
cherry hot
rusalka's revenge (presumably of 7-pot lineage)
yaki blue fawn
7-pot bubblegum
carolina reaper (both regular ass red and pretty, pretty peach)
cumra cherry
scotch bonnets (both red and yellow)
lemon drop
genghis khan brain
satan's kiss

It's a project that I'm very looking forward to and will post all the updates about when I can.

Anyway, I hope everyone is doing well, or as close as you can get to it. I'm hoping to be a little more active on Dreamwidth in the coming months, though I maintain that I don't really have very many interesting things going on and most of my thoughts tend to be along the lines of: what if these two characters kissed, don't you think that'd be grand? Hopefully it'll at least be a nice breath of inconsequential, normal conversation on your reading page.

* per an extremely helpful veggie/fruit planting calendar designed with my specific county in mind

** I'm aware that cucumbers and zucchini aren't properly cousins, but they're both green oblong vegetables and, dammit, that's close enough for me and the members of many a rural community in the American south

DUE WEST
Stevie Budd/Alexis Rose, Patrick Brewer/David Rose, ensemble

I wrote a fic for the delightful Anthrobrat for the Chocolate Box Exchange ([community profile] chocolateboxcomm) and figured some of y'all might be interested!

Summary: With a little help from their friends, Alexis and Stevie prepare to travel across the country together to take advantage of new opportunities in sunny Los Angeles, California.

“Seriously, David?” Alexis rolled her eyes and reached up with both hands to tuck the few stray curls that had fallen loose from her artfully messy bun back behind her ears. “According to our travel itinerary, we’re supposed to be on the road by nine o’clock at the latest.” She took a breath like she was about to lay into him further and then peered over Stevie’s shoulder and froze. “I’m sorry. Um. Are you doubling up your business suits in one garment bag?”

“No,” Stevie said, affronted, and Alexis breathed a sigh of relief. Stevie gestured to the three remaining sets of coordinating jackets and slacks laid out across the table and added, “I was hoping to get all five in there.”

Alexis’s green eyes went wide under her furrowed brow, mouth pulling down at the corners. She glanced over at David—who raised his eyebrows high and smug, as if his point had just been proven for him—and bared her teeth in a grimace.

“Okay,” she said, putting a gentle hand on Stevie’s shoulder and guiding her backwards, “yeah. No. Just, here, babe, let me. We’re not putting
five suits in a single garment bag, okay?”

Threw together a handful of my favorite playlists/albums to work to as a gift for [community profile] fandomtrees and figured some of you other nerds might also be interested. They're all Spotify links, because that's what I use to listen to music most often, but you can probably find any of the songs on these playlists elsewhere. Particularly the albums are likely available in full through like, YouTube or what have you.

The Man from U.N.C.L.E. Original Motion Picture Soundtrack — a nice blend of classic hits like Roberta Flack's "Compared to What" and Louis Prima's "Five Months, Two Weeks, Two Days" combined with instrumental score pieces and probably my favorite film soundtrack of all time

'This Is No BS! Brass Band' Spotify Playlist — if you like marching band music with a dance-y twist, this band is the bomb and this playlist is a nice sampling of their sound; features a combination of fantastic original pieces like "3AM Bounce," interspersed with covers of popular tunes such as a-ha's "Take On Me" and Rush's "Tom Sawyer"

'Is It New Wave?' Spotify Playlist — starts off strong with Blondie's "Heart of Glass" and then guides you through a landscape of alt-pop hits that may or may not be new wave, featuring a lot of Talking Heads, The Cure, Joy Division, The Smiths, DEVO, and other familiar old-school names

'70s FM Radio Rider' Spotify Playlist — another 'oldies but goodies' sort of playlist, this is basically just a bunch of radio hits from one of the greatest eras of music; even if you weren't around in the 70s (as I was not), you'll probably recognize a bunch of these songs from various media over the years, and so, so many of them are catchy little earworms that are fun to work to

'If It Ain't Baroque...' aka Baroque 50: Spotify Picks Playlist — 100% classical from top to bottom, from what is arguably the greatest classical music era of all time; featuring Vivaldi, Bach, Handel, and one of my personal faves, Antionio Bertali, among many other beloved composers, this is classical music designed for listening and improvisation and it's super fun if you're into classical

'Essential Alternative' Spotify Playlist — if you're in the mood for some music that's right in the rearview mirror, this is a playlist that features a lot of my personal faves from my high school/early college days (being the early-mid 2000s) and has a nice recently-nostalgic radio feel

'This Is The Front Bottoms' Spotify Playlist — if you enjoy the slightly whiney, pop-meets-indie/alt-rock sound, it doesn't really get better than The Front Bottoms, imo, and this playlist is just a bunch of their best songs across various albums all jammed together

Stardew Valley (Original Game Soundtrack) — instrumental music with a digital feel, this is a great one for nice lazy background jams

Crumb on Spotify — okay, not technically a playlist or one specific album, but Crumb is soft, slow, modern psychedelic pop/rock that's incredibly soothing to listen to; they feature on a handful of playlists like 'Modern Psychedelia' and 'Dreampop' and I really love them for chilling out

Purity Ring's "Shrines" Album — dreamy electropop that's easy to zone out to

The Distillers' "Coral Fang" Album — catchy, delightful punk-pop with a husky voiced female vocalist and one of my fave albums of all time

'This Is ABBA' Spotify Playlist — I feel like this one should go without saying, but I will go on record and say that it's almost impossible to have a bad day when you're listening to 70s Swedish pop sensation ABBA

'This Is Anamanaguchi' Spotify Playlist — instrumental, dancey chiptune for days when you have a lot to get done and you need fast, fun beats to keep you moving

LAVANDULA ANGUSTIFOLIA
Bill Tench & Nancy Tench, pre-Holden Ford/Bill Tench

I wrote a thing for me just for fun and put it on the internet because why the hell not?

Summary: In which Bill and Nancy are in a lavender marriage and Nancy just wants her husband to be happy.

“You can’t deny that he’s a looker, even with that choirboy side-part.”

Bill shifted in his seat, shaking the newspaper a little. He pointedly didn’t look over at Nancy when he muttered, “If you say so.”

“Don’t pretend like you don’t see it. A single flutter of those baby blues would forgive much worse than an uptight hairdo.” She cut him a sly smirk, one eyebrow rising, and added in a lower tone, “I’ll bet you let that boy get away with absolute murder, don’t you?”

“We are not talking about this.”

“Why not?”

“Because I don’t need you indulging some misguided impulse to matchmake me. Especially not with a coworker more than a decade my junior.”

Welp. Dropped out of all my exchanges today. Writing is getting difficult in a way that's troublesome, and on top of that I think I've been using it to dissociate from real life too much. I'm going to finish up the two fic I owe for [community profile] equalityauction sometime before the end of the year and might poke at some other things for my own amusement in the meantime, but I think I'm going to take some time away from fandom otherwise. Maybe I'll finally read through the huge volume of books I've been meaning to get to for years.

In other news, I've started watching Ken Burns' Baseball. I'm on the second "inning" of the now 10-part documentary and I have to say it's fairly excellent so far. Very engaging, comprehensive, and well-curated, with a variety of masterfully interwoven perspectives. Not as scathing as I might personally prefer in regards to some of the race issues of the mid- to late-eighteen hundreds, but at least it hasn't shied away from them, either. In any case, I'm confident that by the end I'll have an entirely new field of knowledge to apply on trivia nights, if those are ever a thing again.

I'm also re-watching Suits, in the hopes that an old favorite fandom might inspire me a little bit or bolster my confidence. While my love of the early seasons and the dynamic between Mike and Harvey remains strong — not to mention the true glory of watching Gina Torres prowl around being awesome in fabulous dresses — it hasn't sparked the creative energy I was hoping it would. At least the banter and homoerotic subtext is still just as delightful as it was the first few times I watched it.

I hope everyone else is doing well.

ONE INCH FROM THE EDGE
Faraday/Vasquez

Welp! I was all queued up to finally hit 100 fic posted to AO3 and it only seemed fitting that this most auspicious honor go to the pairing that pulled me back into fandom all those years ago. I’ve made so many new friends since joining back up with AO3, many of whom I can’t imagine my life without and I’m just very, very glad to be here so I hope y’all enjoy this bit of fluff in celebration. Inspired by an anonymous prompter on Tumblr who asked for an “in secret kiss” between a pairing of my choosing as part of a couple of kiss memes I’m currently running over there. (Links in endnote of fic for anyone who’d like to participate.)

Summary: On the morning of Rose Creek’s reckoning, Faraday’s neckerchief goes missing. Luckily, he has a pretty good idea of who took it.

“You think you’re real cute,” Faraday muttered into the wet heat of Vasquez’s mouth, and swallowed down the answering chuckle.

He sank his teeth gently into the pulp of Vasquez’s lower lip, mouth curling at the corners when the other man caught a moan in the back of his throat and opened up for him. There wasn’t time for much more than this — the slick, sweet slide of Vasquez’s tongue curling against his own — but Faraday was greedy enough for this strange, tender intimacy that had sprung up between them to take what he could get and covet it until such time as he could glut himself anew.

“Trading goddamn favors like maidens in a fairytale.”
